Hey wait, every week is garden week!
Happy Garden Week, everyone! It was a surprise to me, too—but hey, any excuse to talk about dirt is a good one.
While the camp calendar marks this week for celebration, the garden itself operates on nature's clock. Behind the scenes, every single day of the growing season is "Garden Week."
Here is what actual, unglamorous day-to-day garden life looked like this morning:

The Reality of Triage:
I just hauled out 10 pounds of cucumbers, but had to pull the rest of the crop due to a massive blight (severe white and yellow patching on the fruit).
The War on Weeds:
Chickweed is trying to stage a coup. I’m currently laying down massive swaths of cardboard to prep the soil for woodchips to keep it under control.

A Neighborhood Reality:
I found two soda cans and a pocket knife left behind in the tomato patches today. Some folks outside our immediate school community are helping themselves to the produce. You know, I'm not terribly upset about that, but I just wish they picked up their trash and tools. That's not too much to ask is it?
The Garden is a Process, Not a Prop
A community garden doesn't just happen because it's on a schedule. It requires consistent, daily sweat equity. I love that the school is highlighting our space this week, but please remember that this is a resource available to your classrooms all season long. You don't need a special themed week to come out here, learn, or participate. The blog is updated 2–3 times a week specifically so you can sync up with what's actually happening in the soil.
Come on out, check the latest updates, and let’s make every week garden week.
