Let's Take A Tour of The Garden!
Garden Week brought some unexpected company to the dirt, and honestly, it was the best part of my week. I got to host several students for an authentic, hands-on tour of what it really takes to keep this place running.
Here’s a quick recap of what we got into:
The Toolbox: We went over the arsenal—shovels, hoes, and pitchforks—and talked about how each tool helps us manage the land.
The Cycle of Life: We checked out the compost piles to see how yesterday’s waste becomes tomorrow’s nutrient-rich soil.
The Reward: The cherry tomatoes were perfectly ripe! The students got to harvest a bunch, and then taste-tested the harvest after cleaning the fruit.

More Than Just Dirt: The Gardener's Uniform
The kids also got a lesson in garden survival. I showed them my daily uniform: a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, heavy-duty pants, boots, gloves, and a face scarf. It’s not a fashion statement—it’s essential armor against the sun, biting bugs, sharp tools, and prickly weeds.
The Takeaway: The garden isn’t just a pretty backdrop; it’s a working classroom. Seeing the students connect the dots between the tools, the labor, and the food on their plates is exactly why I do this.
Garden Week might be wrapping up on the school calendar, but the gates are always open. See you out here!
